Vedic Astrology / Nakshatra

Your Vedic moon sign and the lunar mansion of your birth.

Understanding Vedic Astrology / Nakshatra

Jyotisha, commonly called Vedic or Indian astrology, is a South Asian tradition with roots in classical Sanskrit literature and a continuous scholarly and ritual history. It uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars, which places most planets about one sign earlier than the tropical zodiac used in the West.

Two features stand out for a newcomer. First, the Moon rather than the Sun is central: a person’s rashi is usually their Moon sign. Second, the zodiac is also divided into twenty-seven nakshatras, or lunar mansions, each spanning about 13°20′ and carrying its own deity, symbol, and qualities. The nakshatra of the Moon at birth is traditionally used for naming ceremonies and for choosing auspicious timing.

Jyotisha also uses dashas, planetary periods that divide a life into long chapters. People explore it for its detail, its integration with ritual and cultural life, and its distinctive lunar emphasis.

How Birth Mosaic Uses It

This is a calculated chapter needing birth date, time, and place, since the Moon moves quickly and nakshatra boundaries are narrow. Birth Mosaic uses a standard ayanamsa and names it, because different ayanamsa choices can shift a borderline placement.

What You May Discover

  • Your sidereal Moon sign and how it differs from a Western Sun sign
  • The nakshatra your birth Moon falls in and its traditional symbol
  • Qualities that classical texts associate with that lunar mansion
  • How dasha periods describe timing across a lifetime
  • Why sidereal and tropical charts disagree

Key Concepts

Jyotisha
The Sanskrit term for Indian astrology, literally 'the science of light'.
Rashi
A zodiac sign in the sidereal zodiac; the Moon's rashi is commonly used as the main sign.
Nakshatra
One of twenty-seven lunar mansions, each with its own symbol, deity, and qualities.
Ayanamsa
The offset between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs; different schools use slightly different values.
Dasha
A planetary period system dividing a life into successive ruling phases.

A Simple Example

Example: if the Moon at birth stood at 5° Taurus sidereal, it would fall in the nakshatra Krittika, whose symbol is a blade or flame and which is traditionally linked with sharp clarity. This shows how a placement becomes a nakshatra; it is not your placement.

Keep in Mind

Jyotisha is a living religious and cultural tradition in South Asia, embedded in ritual practice and study lineages. Schools differ on house systems, ayanamsa, and technique, and popular English summaries often simplify heavily. Approach it as a tradition with its own context, not a novelty.
